Emma, Charles, & Saphronia Hollenbeck

The family visits the Wyoming Monument in Luzerne Co., Pa.
Although we can find no Hollenbeck or Nafus listed among those honored
by this monument to Revolutionary War Heros, we assume they were here
to honor the memory of some relative of theirs. (c. late 1800s)

June 12. 2007 I was privileged to receive an e-mail regarding the Hollenbeck relationship to those honored by this memorial. This is the message:

Hello,

I was running a search and came across your web site picture of 3 Hollenbeck's standing in front of the Wyoming Monument. To answer the quest posted there. Absolutely, his name is Mathias Hollenbeck who fought and survived the battle. Mathias was the Ensign of the 2nd Independent Company under the command of Captain Samuel Ransom. He served with with the Continental Army attached to General Washington from 1777-1778. Due to illness during the winter of 1777, just prior to Valley Forge, he returned to the Wyoming Valley where he continued to live during and after the Battle. In 1784 he moved with many of the settlers to northern Pa where in later years he served as a Colonel in the PA Militia.

I hope you find this helpful.

July 4th myself along with the current 24th Connecticut Militia Regiment will be present at the annual ceremony honoring those valiant heroes.

I remain,
YH&MOS
Harry Stephens, Captain
1st Independent Company
24th Connecticut Militia Regiment
Commander

Captain Stephens is identified with his permission. We are grateful to him for this information.
