Many of the people of Costa Rica have taken the lead in preserving the environment of their country. The forest is a private preserve owned by the former president.
He bought an old farm with depleted land. All he did was let it alone. It wasn't long before the forest began to grow. Now it looks like a virgin, old-growth forest.

Now he has developed the property for the enjoyment of people who want to go there and enjoy the forest. There are several rooms and cabins available for rent, and there is a restaurant and small gift shop in the visitor center. Part of the villa is in the background of the photo above.
