People use this space between houses access to their homes.

The purple and red flags at the gateway tell the guides that tour groups are welcome to visit in this home.

This alley actually leads to homes that have no other access to the street. The Chinese have lived this way for many centuries. In Hawaii, author James Mitchener spends a lot of time talking about the warrens Honolulu's Chinatown.
