This the Great Hall Of The People,

the site of Party congresses — they vote unanimously.

For socialism's tenth anniversary in 1959, Mao had the Great Hall of the People and two museums built in only ten months — part of Beijing's Ten Great Works. Loudspeakers, lampposts, and surveillance cameras were installed at that time.

While you're here, and most other tourist spots in China, don't even look at what the "in your face" vendors offer, that is unless you want to be swarmed the remainder of your stay in that area.

This is the Monument of the People's Heroes
It is 118-feet high, granite obelisk with bas-reliefs of important revolutionary and historical events such as the destruction of opium in Canton in 1839.
