We flew into Xi'an (She-on) airport in the afternoon, and after a long ride through flat farmlands arrived in this city of 4.5 million people early enough to snap these street scenes.

A Row Of Stores For Entrepreneurs

Many streets in all the cities we visited are lined with these little stalls like the two framed in orange above. These are filled with stores of every description, the businesses owned and operated by individuals. Most of them are equiped with overhead doors for closing at night. And some have upgraded to stationary doors that can leave the space partially closed off when the business is open, like the red doors on the right and the blue on the far left.
