Welcome to Tuscany

Day 15: Monday, April 25, 2005
Getting started on our trip to Lucca.
People will start boarding around 8 AM.

Yup, there they are.

These are a few of the carriages that wait to take Rotterdam's passengers
to their various destinations for the day.

Along The Road To Lucca
Most Italian cities date back to Roman times. In those days there were marshes along the coast, and malaria was rampant. It wasn't until the Hapsburgs controlled the region that they were successful in land reclaimation. They dug canals to drain the land, and planted eucalyptus trees and umbrella pines to use the surplus water.

Left: Some umbrella pines near the highway. Below: Umbrella pines were pointed out to us by our guide in Portugal, and this is the first time I've been able to get a picture of these unique pines.

We are about to arrive in the city of Lucca. If you want to skip the pictures of this quaint and most interesting town, use the orbs of the Tuscany Page Navigator below, and click the button to the right of the spinning globe to continue with the Tuscan countryside.
