Former Kanapana Village

You may remember seeing news film of people as they watched their homes overtaken and burned by the hot lava. That probably happened in the 1982 eruption. And this is were it happened.

In the picture above, the dead trees are easily seen around the edges of the forest patches between the lava flows.

This area is not far from the shore where the lava tube dumps into the ocean.


Although we're quite near, we cannot see the orange lava as it tumbles into the sea. The tide is in and covers the spectical. We can, however see the steam rising from the surf above the place where the lava meets the sea.
